About Me:
My name is Michael Peterson, an autodidact theologian1 who has studied, written about, translated, and taught the Hebrew Bible and New Testament for nearly three decades. My journey into biblical scholarship was unconventional: I’ve never attended seminary or pursued formal religious training, apart from university-level biblical Hebrew courses and seminars. Instead, my academic background is in Cancer Immunology, where I earned a PhD. While this field doesn’t directly inform my biblical work, the rigorous critical thinking and scholarly analysis honed during my graduate study shapes how I approach scripture.
My path to theology has been eclectic. to say the least. I began my career as a cowboy on an Arabian Pinto breeding ranch in Northern Alberta, then served as a Cobra AH-1G attack helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where I was shot down and captured in 1969—an experience that profoundly shaped my perspective on life and faith. After graduate school, I left science for a successful career as a software engineer, a rare profession in those early days. In 2003, I retired, cashed in my stock, and dedicated myself to fly-fishing and intensive Bible study.
Today, my wife and I split our time between an off-grid cabin in Montana’s Sapphire Mountains and a second home in Washington’s San Juan Islands. Raised Lutheran, I left denominational traditions when many, in my view, traded the Bible’s moral clarity for the fog of secular philosophy. Now, as an unaffiliated Christian, I believe Jesus calls us to live out God’s moral will. Through this website, I aim to share insights from my self-taught journey into scripture, hoping you find it both informative and engaging.
Blessings,
Michael
